The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has teamed with an auto supplier and an industry group to create technology that would use the ignition button to detect the driver’s blood-alcohol level through the skin, the Detroit Free Press reports.br /nbsp;br /Auto supplier Takata — producer of seat belts, airbags, steering wheels and more — received anbsp; grant to make this technology available. The project, called the Driver Alcohol Detection System for Safety, is financed by NHTSA and a joint initiative with the Automotive Coalition for Traffic Safety. NHTSA says the technology could voluntarily be installed as an option in new cars.br /nbsp;br /Current detection devices are intrusive and take a few seconds to process after a user blows into the device. Takata wants its product to be non-intrusive to the driver, take less than 200 milliseconds to process and cost about $200.br /nbsp;br /a href="http://www.freep.com/article/20110927/BUSINESS01/109270441/Car-button-could-tell-you-re-tipsy" target="_self"Car Button Could Tell If You’re Tipsy/a span style="color: #888888;"(Detroit Free Press)/span/p/div
